A German once visited a temple under construction where he saw a sculptor making an idol of a God. Suddenly he noticed a similar idol lying nearby. Surprised, he asked the sculptor, “Do you need two statues of the same idol?” “No,” said the sculptor without looking up, “We need only one, but the first one got damaged at the last stage.”

The gentleman examined the idol and found no apparent damage. “Where is the damage?” he asked. “There is a scratch on the nose of the idol.” said the sculptor, still busy with his work.

“Where are you going to install the idol?” The sculptor replied that it would be installed on a pillar twenty feet high.

“If the idol is that far, who is going to know that there is a scratch on the nose?” the gentleman asked. The sculptor stopped his work, looked up at the gentleman, smiled and said, “I will know it.”

The desire to excel is exclusive of the fact whether someone else appreciates it or not. “Excellence” is a drive from inside, not outside. Excellence is not for someone else to notice but for your own satisfaction and efficiency.

  1. Firstly, congrats about your painting skills…
Secondly, a wow for taking inspiration from this story. That is exactly stories like this are supposed to affect…
Thirdly, very good for attempting to make it perfect…
Finally! Don’t worry about results yet… am sure your investment in time and effort will be paid off for sure!

Now, scan or click a pic of that ‘Maya’ for us 😀

  2. I was so inspired by this story that I went home and sat with my painting, correcting the eye (which apparently did not come out as good as I wished, I tried and tried to correct it and finally gave up) I sat for nearly an hour…very true, though it may not matter to anybody else, how perfect or imperfect it is and others may not even notice the imperfection, it will surely matter to me and I need to atleast excel in my eyes and satisfy myself 🙂 (I donno how far I have succeeded, but yes atleast I tried and for me, now my Maya (name of the lady in my painting) is excellent! I am satisfied 🙂 )
